It's official! Prince William gave fiancée, Kate Middleton, the engagement ring that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana. It's a ring that has inspired romances around the world: an 18-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 brilliant-cut diamonds and set in 18-carat white gold. Designed by Garrard Jewelers, the longtime official crown jeweler for the British monarchy, this was originally a "store-bought ring" -- when Prince Charles proposed to Diana in 1981 he did not immediately present Diana with a ring, so she could consider the implications of their marriage. Diana then chose the sapphire stunner that has since inspired countless copies. It was rumored to have been left to Prince Harry, but the brilliant gem now sparkles on Kate's finger.

But Kate's new bling is just one ring in a long line of royal jewels. Take a look back at some of our other favorite royal engagement rings.

When the Queen's grandson proposed to Autumn Kelly, he presented her a three-diamond ring set in white gold. Upon the Swedish Crown Princess' engagement to her longtime boyfriend (Daniel proposed on one knee in the grounds of Drottningholm Palace), the couple kept quiet about the ring.
