A Look Back: Royal Engagement Photos

After a press conference announcing their engagement, Prince William and Kate Middleton posed for photographer Mario Testino. The famed fashion photographer, a favorite of his mother, Princess Diana, took both formal and casual photos of the young couple, so obviously happy together.


Below is a look back at the formal engagement portraits and press conference photos of other members of the Windsor family, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, and Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones.

The future Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh announced their engagement and posed for these engagement portraits at Buckingham Palace in July 1947.

In 1986 Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's third child announced his engagement to Sarah Ferguson. Unlike his elder brother's engagement portrait, Prince Andrew dressed in a more casual manner in a button down shirt and sweater.

The youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip announced his engagement to public relations professional Sophie Rhys-Jones in January 1999. The couple posed for pictures at St. James's Palace.

The future King of England and his longtime girlfriend, Catherine "Kate" Middleton, announced their engagement on November 16, 2010. The couple then posed for pictures in the State Apartments of St. James's Palace. The bride wore a blue dress by ISSA, which sold out within hours of this press conference.

After announcing their engagement, the couple hired famed fashion photographer Mario Testino, a favorite of Princess Diana's, to shoot their official engagement portraits. The couple posed in the formal Council of Chamber at St. James's Palace.

In addition to formal engagement portraits, Prince William and Kate Middleton posed for casual photographs too. The couple changed their attire and showed their love and affection for one another in this adorable photo by Mario Testino.
