It's official: Prince William is engaged to Kate Middleton!

The groom's family announced the long-awaited engagement and upcoming wedding today.

The world's most eligible bachelor proposed to his girlfriend of eight years during a safari in Kenya in October.

According to the official statement, "The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton. The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

"Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father. Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "Both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are absolutely delighted for them both."

Before the Official Announcement the Prince of Wales Tweeted his Son's Engagement News

The couple has been (officially) together for eight years, though they broke up for a short time in 2007. They met while they were both students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2001. The couple roomed in the same dorm and in 2002 moved off campus to a private house with two friends.

At a fashion show in 2001 the future king of England was overheard telling a friend that he thought Kate was "hot" when she modeled a see-through dress with black lingerie underneath.

Many of the couple's wedding plans are still unknown, but it is expected that Prince Harry, Prince William's younger brother, will act as best man and the details of the wedding will be organized by Clarence House, which oversees Prince Charles' and his sons' affairs.

Watched the announcement on TV this morning. Royal spokesman for the Queen was making comparisons between Diana and Kate. He made the comment that Kate knows she will always be second in William's life as his being King will be first. While Kate accepts this, Diana didn't and that is something that caused the demise of their marriage. I beg to differ. The marriage fell apart due to Diana being third in Charle's life. Camilla was second and that is what caused the marriage, sham that it was, to fall apart from day one.

You got that one right, Joyce!

Perhaps one of the lessons learned from Diana's tragic story is that Kate will now be more fully aware of the joys and pitfalls of marrying the future King of England. She seems to be far more savvy and worldly wise at her age than Diana was. Plus, Prince William is not saddled with the stodgy old thought process that his father was. It's certain that he would never put himsself or his new wife through the hell that Charles and Diana endured.

I think it's wonderful and glamorous that there will be another royal wedding in my lifetime. And those who post crass and hateful comments - are they really hurting you in some aggregious way?? For heaven sake - get off your high horse and get on with your life! Must love and a lifetime of happiness to William & Kate!

    I couldn't agree more.

Well said and true. It still breaks my heart in twain when I think how Diana was treated and she died because of this.

I SINCERELY HOPE THE PAPARAZZI WILL LEAVE THIS COUPLE ALONE AND SHOW SOME RESPECT TO THEIR PRIVACY.

I WISH THEM BOTH MUCH HAPPINESS.

Diana stated repeatedly she wanted to be a wife/mother and just a help to Charlie. Unfortunately-Charlie was jealous of Diana and the fact that she was compassionate and kind to those less fortunate. Oh-yes-ADD TO IT THAT CHARLIE HAD A SJANKY MISTRESS THE ENTIRE TIME!!!!! And said mistress is the laziest piece of trailer trash ever.

  • Ty

    I agree

Diana said there were "three of us in this marriage" and she was right! Also I would like to say that I am just disgusted that they are allowing the Duchess of Cornball, the queen of dread, princess of homewreckers, to make any comment what-so-ever on Prince William's engagement. Cornball should be locked away in the dungeons of London and never be heard from again. Diana was so lucky for them to take away her HRH because none on them can be buried along side of her. She had to put up with them in life and has found peace in death..away from them. The truth of Diana's death may never be known but Karma will get those responsible just wait and see.

Here, here, well said Joyce. Diana was offered as a "vestal virgin," on the altar of marriage. I'm happy for Willam and Kate, am sure Diana would have liked her as well.

  • Debbie

That's it in a nut shell! Di was too real to be a part of the royal family but now there is new blood Di's blood and William has her heart and soul and little do they all know, but he is his mothers child... he will put his wife first! He may have to talk the talk, but he will never walk the walk of his cold hearted father. Congratulations to a preciouse young man, I know his mother is smiling down on both him and darling Kate.

Your exactly right ! I do feel Lady Diana did change alot of attitudes. If the politics would have allowed, or if Prince Charles would have had a backbone with some morals it would have made a huge difference.
